Vmware Fine del supporto di ESX
E’ giunto con la relase 4.1 finalmente l’annuncio che era nell’aria quando ESXi è stato rinominato conl’uscita della release 4.1 ovvero che ESX è giunto alla fine della sua vita.
Ecco l’annuncio ufficiale e sotto un estratto
…Going forward customers will be able to deploy vSphere only using ESXi. Although the infrastructure management tasks once performed by the Service Console are now handled by tasks running under the VMkernel, some ESX users may still depend on the custom scripts, third-party products, or operational procedures that use the Service Console.
This means that upgrading to vSphere 4.1 is the perfect time to start planning on migrating to the ESXi architecture and eventually break all dependencies on the Service Console once and for all. Here is a quick summary of what you should look into:
- Replace COS-based hardware monitoring with CIM-based tools
- Replace COS-based backup technologies with products that use the vStorage APIs
- Replace COS-based scripts using the VMware Management Assistant, the vCLI, or vSphere PowerCLI

Cosa significaExtended Support ? Questa è la definizone Vmware:
New hardware platforms are no longer supported, new guest OS updates may or may not be applied, and bug fixes are limited to critical issues. Critical bugs are deviations from specified product functionality that cause data corruption, data loss, system crash, or significant customer application down time and there is no work-around that can be implemented.

Supporto Oracle a Vmware
Oracle ha modificato la policy riguardo il supporto di SAP in ambienti VMware come da nota SAP 1173954:
1. Dal 13 Gennaio 2010, Oracle supporta SAP in ambienti di produzione che usano il DB Oracle a singola instanza (no RAC) virtualizzati con VMware ESX 3.5 o superiore
2. Il minimo OS per MSFT e’ Windows Server 2008; anche SLES e RHEL sono supportati
3. La minima release di Oracle e’: Oracle 10.2.0.4
4. Oracle supporta VMware nel contesto descritto dalla Nota di Oracle Metalink 249212.1
Nota interessante: una nuova nota di SAP 1426182 riguardo al “Support of Oracle Databases for XEN”, evidenzia chiaramente che “XEN virtualized environments on the Linux platform impact critical runtime related areas for the Oracle Database such as process scheduling, network and disk IO access. Therefore Oracle does not support to run production databases in XEN virtualized environments.”
Allo stesso modo al momento non c’e’ nessun supporto da Oracle per Hyper-V.
