The Storage VMotion (SVMotion) is also active in VMware ESX 3.5, but only from the command line, as you know with vSphere version 4.0 this option is native GUI.

There is a plugin unofficial but supported by VMware that allows you to move virtual machines storage hot.

In this way you avoid unnecessary downtime and all work can be done in total transparency and stress during the day, because usually you do downtime in the middle of the night or at times preposterous .. I would like therefore to stress the importance of this plugin ..

The plugin is very easy to install and use, take the file -SVMotionClientSetup 0.4.4.msi and install it on machines with VMware Infrastructure Client (the ones that make the management but if you want you can use it only to die of envy you and your colleagues)

After installing the VMware Infrastructure Client and select files:

- Plugins-> Manage Plugins-> Installed
- Finally in the new window click enabled.

From this moment on, the plugin will be up and running and you can also make Storage VMotion hot on vmware esx 3.5
If you select a new virtual machine with the right you will see a new entry: "Migrate Storage" by clicking on it will open a new window that will show you all available datastores and give you the ability to drag the disk from a datastore to another of vmware . All this of course hot, that is, without shutting down the virtual machine hehe

Here are screenshots of a window that allows VMotion:
