Vmware ESX to ESXi in seven steps Part 1

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 11:37

The next release of vSphere ESX no longer support.

In this migration process is important, therefore, planning and knowledge I've gathered the information in 7 key points to properly prepare for this new way to manage hosts.

1) Know your enemy: differences between ESX and ESXi

It 's good to have a thorough understanding of the differences between ESX and ESXi.

The two Hypervisors run on the basis of the same VMkernel, but manage ESXi and manage different from ESX.

I recommend reading the following articles:

comparison between ESX and ESXi comparison

ESX vs.. ESXi 4.1 KnowledgeBase article

ESX and ESXi because they were very distant dedicatia very different purposes but with vSphere 4.1 several differences have been resolved

2) Increase the experience ESXi

Even if you have used ESXi, you increase your skills.

To experiment, create a soft test environment as not to impact the production environment.

If you do not have hardware advances, you can run ESXi in a vitual machine (VM) on an ESX host or VMware Workstation.

Learn the different techniques used on ESXi installandovSphere command-line interface (CLI) on your workstation and installing vSphere Management Assistant (VMA) in an ESXi host. Get used to using the vSphere PowerCLI and experience the Tech Support Mode (TSM) console either remotely or locally.

3. Find alternatives to agents and script on the ESX Service Console.

If you use agents on the ESX Service Console script and there are alternatives that work on ESXi.

There are both agents of backup hardware monitoring. Do a check with manufacturers to esserre sure that they have a technology that supports ESXi. Sometimes you will need to upgrade obsolete software.

Many agents have been included in the monitoring hardware ESXi installable through customization files that are inside the file oem.tgz file on the partition of ESXi installed please download or customizations from the hardware manufacturer's website.

If you use Perl scripts from the Service Console, you must begin to consider PowerShell, vSphere CLI or VMA.

vSphere Management Assistant (VMA)

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 14:01

Today we speak of VMA.

What is it?

According to vmware is this:

The VMware vSphere Management Assistant (VMA) is a prepackaged Linux virtual machine administrators can deploy in Which scripts and select third-party agents to manage ESX and ESXi systems. Software included in VMA includes vSphere CLI, an authentication Component That Supports non-interactive login, and log-collection component.

BUT in practice is a great help to manage all aspects of the remote management of ESXi.

I recommend it to shut down the VM and then the same ESX / ESXi when the power goes off and the UPS is running out.

Or to run scripts of any kind.

VMware ESX copy data via USB drives

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 17:52

And 'possible to connect a USB disk, formatted FAT, and use it safely on an ESX system to copy files to and from the disc itself.

Here are the steps:

  1. connect the USB drive (flash or hard)
  2. create a folder through which to mount the disk
    mkdir / mnt / pendrive
  3. find out how the system has been Ext drive you want to mount
    dmesg | tail
  4. make the disc mount
    mount / dev/sde1 / mnt / pendrive vfat-t
  5. be happy

Note: Use FastSCP as I reported here is much faster if the data are many

Vmware ESX / ESXi VM Copy and Migrate

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 13:33

Often you have to migrate and move virtual machines from old to new version of ESX / ESXi to reorganize or even just to make the upgrade to Release 4.1.

I recommend FastSCP Veeam

End of support for VMware ESX

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 18:39

E 'come with the 4.1 relase finally the announcement that ESXi was in the air when it was renamed conl'uscita ESX 4.1 release or that has come to the end of his life.

Here is the ' official announcement and an excerpt

Going forward ... customers will be Able to deploy vSphere ESXi only using. Although the infrastructure management tasks performed by the Service Console ounces are now handled by tasks running under the VMkernel, some ESX users may still depend on the custom scripts, third-party products, procedures or operational That use the Service Console.

This Means That upgrade to vSphere 4.1 is the perfect time to start planning on migrating to the ESXi architecture and Eventually break all dependencies on the Service Console ounce and for all. Here is a quick summary of What You Should Look into:

  • Replace COS-based hardware monitoring with CIM-based tools
  • Replace COS-based backup technologies with products That the use vStorage APIs
  • Replace COS-based scripts using the VMware Management Assistant, the vCLI, or vSphere PowerCLI

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 16:23

Directly from Vmware Labs, a useful extension to manage operations remotely by browser ....

The Operations Panel is a scripting tool, 'which runs on the client browser and the ESX Server extends the default web page with a short list of all available virtual machines. It gives the user the ability to perform simple power operations (start, stop, suspend, resume). Easily accessible user interface for some of the most common operations on an ESX host, ESX available Directly from the home page.

PXE & ESX

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 10:46

More and more frequently there is business critical installations where speed of deployment is essential not only in startup phase, but also in the subsequent recovery of a failed server.

If you do not choose Boot from SAN!

Or to make reinstallations migrations from the "iron" for not bringing previous configurations or in the case (as in blade servers from IBM) is necessary to revise the layout of the disks during upgrades.

Booting from the network means you always have the media to make on an installation on a test environment

Here the excellent article by Scott Lowe

P2V SCO Openserver

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 11:35

I quote here the info needed to convert one of SCO-Vmware ESX ESXi I gathered from some of the network and I'm currently testing server on an old friend.

Some TIPS:

  1. Select IDE disk emulation
  2. Remember to reconfigure the networking

TO-DO

  1. Try Acronis as out-of-the-box solution
