USB HOWTO in VMware ESX and ESXi

Category: Technology - David Bombard @ 13:41

Using daily ESX and ESXi virtualization you discover the difficulty setting of the USB.

The USB physical port being connected to a undermines all the efforts made with the virtualization abstraction.

But what if you need a USB device (eg a USB HASP hadware)?

And 'possible to activate a usb passthrough (I have never seen work as designed, however, exists), or?

There are IP-USB hubs!

Officially supported by the Digi AnywhereUSB Vmware. and they are EXPENSIVE.

There is a simple and economical laternativa: Belkin F5L009 ( http://www.belkin.com/support/product/?lid=en&pid=F5L009&scid=1 ).

With circ 60 Euro you'll almost all USB devices working in your virtual servers - including the HASP keys.

I wanted to translate and condense the use of guides to other users in successfully uniting trackback to my own experience.

I will refer to Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 x64.

Material needed

Time it takes 30-60 minutes

Hardware:

Belkin F5L009
A virtual server to connect to

NOTE: The device only supports USB transfer rate given by the limitation of USB port on board do not know if there are 100 mbps gigabit IPUSB .....

Software:

Silex Virtual Link Tech Driver and Software: http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.htm the I used the version 3.40

We use the version of Silex Belkin as the unit is a rebadged version of the same device and driver can be used on major releases (Win 2000) to 32 and 64 Bit

Other requirements:

Administrative rights on the machines involved.

Patience!

Setup

The issue That Occurs inside of a VMware server is When You install Windows there is no USB root devices found so Windows does not install the proper USB support files. In this case, it's only a single file, Usbd.sys, That Is Missing.

1 - Connect the 'Belkin USB hub to the network
2 - Install the software on silica
3 - Ignore the popup PCA odevice

4 - Find the file Usbd.sys as vvmware not install any USB root is not possible to see USB devices

You can find it on the machine itself, or in another macchinaWindows or in the i386 folder of the Windows installation CD. Copy the files in C: \ windows \ system32 \ drivers \
5 - Reboot the virtual machine
6 - Once termiato reboot, complete the setup of the software, keys, or latri usb device you have connected.

notes on hardware keys
